The St. Vincent de Paul Junior Society began as service activities done by the 8th grade students. God made it clear that these service activities should be available to all middle school students at the school and our service club was born. The goal of the service club was to let students experience as many different works of service as possible. The hope was that these experiences of service would be used, as the students grew into adulthood, for reflection as to where they felt most comfortable serving God.
Five years ago, Sister Teresa Daly invited us to become a St. Vincent de Paul Junior Society. Through her encouragement and guidance, the St. Vincent de Paul Junior Society has given us a defined direction to serve the poor. It has also introduced a deeper spiritual meaning to the good works we perform as St. James states “good works without faith is like a ship without a rudder”.
We have activities to help unite our school and parish in serving God:
+ We work closely with the St. Vincent de Paul Pharmacy and Learning Center providing needed supplies which is funded through the Brown Foundation learning project.
+ We serve food, provided by the men of St. Philip Neri, to the poor every second Saturday of the month at the St. Jude Community Center.
+ We visit Vista Shores Senior housing for a Halloween party and game day where they play games and entertain the residents.
+ We play Bingo and have a Mardi Gras party with the residents of Chateau Notre Dame. We have an Easter egg hunt with “God’s special children” in the spring.
+ We have worked closely with other parish organization such as the Daughters of Isabella, Knights of Columbus, and St. Joseph society.
+ We help decorate the Altar for Christmas, make cookies for the St. Joseph Altar, and help set up and take down the St. Joseph Altar.
Our St. Vincent DePaul Junior Society is always open to answer God’s call to serve wherever and whenever needed.
